Donal Baird has been involved with fire engines since he was a child, living across the street from the fire station. Through his long career he has collected scores of photographs, and talked with fire service people for coast to coast.
In this book, Mr. Baird takes us through the evolution of fire-fighting apparatus in Canada from the primitive hand-pumped fire engines of the mid 1700s to the multi-purpose, emergency-response vehicles of today. His personal knowledge and experience often give the narrative the feel of a first-hand account. He has given special attention to the manufacture of fire engines in Canada, the greatest activity being in Ontario and Quebec, and the growth of the industry across the country.
The text is interspersed with many fascinating photographs of apparatus from Baird's vast collection.
