This new edition of Fire Service Orientation and Terminology acquaints new firefighters with a wide array of topics relating to the fire service. It describes the fire service as a career and explains the various roles of fire service personnel by illustrating the typical job and operation descriptions that should provide insight into the inner workings of the fire service. The manual also covers the traditions and history of the fire service. In addition to providing an overview of the fire service, Orientation and Terminology addresses such vital background work as fire prevention, firefighter safety, public fire and life safety education, and fire investigation. Also discussed are basic scientific terminology used in the fire service; basic building construction; and an overview of fire detection, alarm and suppression systems. It explains the relationship the fire service has with other organizations. It also covers fire department equipment and facilities, as well as fire department organization and management.
Orientation and Terminology has been revised to align with the National Fire Academy's Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Initiative and meets the course objectives for Principles of Emergency Services (Introduction to the Fire Service). This manual also contains a fire service dictionary with thousands of terms used within the fire service.
