Flower arrangement is an agreeable pastime in which flowers and leaves cut in the garden or nursery are combined with natural vegetation, imbuing them with a new purpose and order. They are arranged in compositions that differ from their natural way of growth. Flowers from one plant, leaves from another and perhaps fruit form another still are brought together to create a new form of growth or bloom. A new plant is created, as it were, unknown to nature and destined for a brief existence (we cannot persuade the new creation to take root and perpetuate the composition). Consequently, flower arrangement is essentially a decorative activity of limited duration. That is not to say, however, that the vegetal influence has not always been very powerful.
The dichotomy between 'natural' and 'decorative' is an eternal one, and has arisen time and again throughout the history of the florist's profession.
Decorative florists, play around with colours, shapes and volumes.
