Significant legislative and other developments reflected in the Pocket Criminal Code, 2023 edition, include:

[1] On March 31, 2022, the Order amending Schedule I to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (Tramadol), SOR/2021-44, came into force.

[2] On December 17, 2021, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Canada Labour Code, S.C. 2021, c. 27 (former Bill C-3), received Royal Assent. Its sections 1–5 introduced the offences of intimidating, obstructing, and interfering with persons attempting to obtain or to provide health services, and identified the commission and the effects of these offences as aggravating factors to consider for the purposes of sentencing. These amendments came into force on January 16, 2022

[3] On December 8, 2021, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (conversion therapy), S.C. 2021, c. 24 (former Bill C-4), received Royal Assent, and came into force on January 7, 2022. The amendments of this statute created offences of causing someone to undergo conversion therapy, promoting or advertising conversion therapy, receiving a material benefit from the provision of conversion therapy, and having a role in removing a child from Canada while intending for the child to undergo conversion therapy elsewhere.

[4] On June 3, 2021, An Act to amend the Bills of Exchange Act, the Interpretation Act, and the Canada Labour Code (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation), S.C. 2021, c. 11 (former Bill C-5), received Royal Assent. Its section 3 added the new National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to the Interpretation Act‘s subs. 35(1) definition of “holiday”, which addition came into force on August 3, 2021.

[5] On June 29, 2021, the Sage and Regulated Sports Betting Act, S.C. 2021, c. 20 (former C-218), received Royal Assent. It amended the Criminal Code‘s subs. 207(4) definition of “lottery scheme”, by narrowing the scope of events for which, under para. 207(4)(b), a provincial government or a licensee may not conduct and manage a lottery scheme.
